Fried Green Tomatoes: Not Just a Movie

In 1991, a movie called Fried Green Tomatoes starring Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, and Jessica Tandy was a big hit. It quickly became wildly popular among all age groups, and with women and men alike. The movie was set in 1920s Alabama, and featured a little diner called The Whistle Stop Café. The staples there were barbeque and fried green tomatoes.

People have probably been eating fried green tomatoes for years. However, this movie seemed to bring new attention to this tasty side dish. Now, if you take the time to really look around, you will find recipes all over the place on how to cook green tomatoes. They have been dipped in egg and bread crumbs first, or dredged through flour before being fried. Whatever method you select to prepare your fried tomatoes, the end result promises to be quite tasty.

Following is a very easy recipe to use when turning your green tomatoes into a dish fit for a king:

Fried Green Tomatoes

You will need:

3 Medium size Green Tomatoes, Firm
½ Cup of All Purpose Flour
¼ Cup of Milk
2 Eggs, Beaten
2/3 Cup of Cornmeal or Fine Dry Bread Crumbs
¼ Cup of Olive Oil
½ Teaspoon of Salt
¼ Teaspoon of Pepper

Instructions:

Begin by cutting unpeeled tomatoes into ½ inch slices. Sprinkle the slices with salt and pepper. The tomato slices need to stand for 15 minutes. While tomatoes are standing, put the flour, eggs, milk, and cornmeal or bread crumbs into separate small dishes.

In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil on medium heat. In the following order, dip the slices first in the milk, then in the flour, next in the eggs, and last of all, in the cornmeal or bread crumbs. Place half of the coated slices in the skillet and fry them about 4 to 6 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Remove those slices from the skillet and add the rest of them to cook. You may add more olive oil as you need it. Season the fried green tomatoes with salt and pepper to taste.

These are delicious to serve as a side dish or even as an appetizer.

The following recipe does not exactly contain fried green tomatoes, but it does call for green tomatoes as the main ingredient and can be served as a main course, side dish, or even as a dessert.

Green Tomato Pie

Ingredients:

6 to 8 Medium Size Green Tomatoes
2 Tablespoons of Lemon Juice
1 Teaspoons of Lemon Peel, grated
½ Teaspoon of Salt
¼ Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
¾ Cups of Sugar
2 Tablespoons of Cornstarch
1 Tablespoon of Butter
1 9 inch 2 crust Pie Pastry

Preparation:

Start by washing the green tomatoes thoroughly. Next, peel them and slice. Put the tomatoes, lemon juice, lemon peel, salt, and cinnamon in a saucepan. Using low heat, cook this mixture, frequently stirring. Now, combine the sugar and cornstarch and stir into the tomato mixture. Cook this mixture, stirring continuously, until it appears clear. Add the tablespoon of butter and remove from the heat. Let it cool slightly.

While the mixture is cooling, prepare the pie crust pastry. Pour tomato mixture into the bottom pastry. Cover with the top pastry. Seal the edges, crimp them, and cut several tiny slits into the top pastry so that steam can escape.

Bake at 435 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown. This can be served warm or cooled.

These are just samples of what you can do with green tomatoes. Once you find out just how delicious these are, you may want to start seeking out even more ways to cook them. Your family may be quite impressed with your new culinary dishes.
